About
Meet the Photographer
I came late to photography, starting with an old Nikon D50 and single zoom lens. Back then, in 2011, I was a true beginner who was eager to experiment and learn at every turn.
I think Henri Cartier-Bresson was onto something when in 1934 he stated, “Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst”.
My initial results were certainly proof of this statement and did free me to explore photography without pressure or expectations.
Five years ago, I created more time in my life for photography, focusing first on landscapes, country scenes, and water. Within the past year, I have dabbled with wildlife photography and am now more engaged than ever with photography and photographing various species, brainstorming projects, and planning photography-related trips. I am particularly interested in photographing and learning about owls and wildlife in general and they now occupy most of my reading, research, field days and travel. Truly, I feel like I have just started my photography journey and know there is so much to learn.
I lose track of time when hiking challenging terrain, dawning chestwaders to navigate riverflows, or waiting forever (it seems) in the worst weather to capture an image that uniquely reflects my reverence for nature and wild animals.
By profession, I am a registered professional biologist who, for 35+ years, has worked extensively throughout western Canada. During this time, I have always been drawn to helping and engaging with others, and have spent most of my professional life teaching and managing training in private industry and post-secondary institutions in British Columbia. In 2016, I changed paths, and launched a private training school where, today, our amazing team develops and delivers in-person and online professional development training programs worldwide to more than 21,000 natural resource professionals and indigenous learners.
My future goals include focusing on more photography including trips (Yellowstone National Park in September 2023, Africa February 2024) and projects (including expanding this website), and learning at every turn.
Thanks for stopping by!
Darren
